MPF schemes must innovate to provide the best value for their members. While incentives and education are important, technology is a key driver of progress. As we reflect on 26 years of the MPF under our theme of “Refined.Ready,” it’s clear that the most successful schemes are those that not only adopt new tools but also advance them to create a better overall member experience. The challenge is using technology in a way that genuinely improves this experience.
One scheme that has consistently proven to be innovative is AIA, which won our Best Member Experience and Best Digital Product for the 2026 MPF Awards. They have successfully married technology with member needs through their MPF Smart Advisor.
Launched in October 2025, the MPF Smart Advisor was created to tackle a pressing issue. An AIA survey revealed that 72% of respondents in Hong Kong lack sufficient retirement savings, expecting to delay retirement by an average of 12.8 years. Furthermore, 65% find it difficult to select the right MPF funds, highlighting the need for a solution to simplify retirement planning. The MPF Smart Advisor directly addresses these challenges, helping individuals make informed decisions and better prepare for their financial future.
The MPF Smart Advisor, in partnership with leading fintech company Magnum Research (AQUMON), was designed to combat this problem by making retirement planning simpler and more accessible. We’ve praised it before, but it bears repeating when it comes to MPF, the simpler, the better. This tool has been created empower users to make informed MPF investment decisions with ease. Here’s a reminder why it gets our stamp of approval:
Key Features of AIA’s MPF Smart Advisor
- User-Friendly Design: Instead of overwhelming users, the MPF Smart Advisor simplifies risk profiling down to just five questions.
- Customisable Portfolios: The tool offers personalised suggestions from up to 50 AIA MPF portfolio options, with a detailed breakdown of fund allocation proportions. Users can also indicate preferences for certain regions or ESG funds.
- Portfolio Comparison: A unique feature allows users to see their current AIA MPF portfolio side-by-side with the recommended one. They can also adjust their portfolio, test different scenarios, and see historical performance data.
- Integrated Retirement Calculator: Optimising your portfolio is only half the battle. The tool includes a retirement gap calculator to help users see how much they need to save to reach their goals.
The effectiveness of any digital advice tool depends on a clear and compelling “call to action.” Lengthy assessments can deter users, while missing comparison tools can leave them without essential context. AIA’s MPF Smart Advisor addresses these challenges by offering a straightforward, intuitive experience that encourages members to actively manage their financial future. This approach blends innovation with an enhanced member experience, bringing much-needed refinement to the industry.
