Celebrating a Decade of Excellence: Sun Life’s Rainbow Scheme Earns 10-Year Gold Rating

30 Jan 2026

At MPF Ratings (MPFR), we are committed disciples of the “value for money” concept. While low fees might seem appealing, they can be a race to the bottom. We believe the goal should be an ascent to the top, helping all MPF members maximise their saving, investing, and retirement potential.

“Value for money” isn’t just about reaching the summit; it’s about finding the safest and most consistent path. The pinnacle of our “value for money” assessment is the Gold rating. It’s awarded to schemes delivering the best all-around value through a combination of strong investment outcomes, robust governance, diverse fund choices, superior service, and a commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

Sun Life’s Rainbow MPF Scheme has achieved an extraordinary milestone by earning our prestigious Gold rating for 10 consecutive years. This consistent performance solidifies its position as a leader in delivering exceptional value to both members and employers.

MPFR’s Gold rating reflects a scheme’s ability to provide outstanding value, based on both quantitative and qualitative factors. Our evaluation combines publicly available data with information sourced directly from schemes, all of which is fact-checked to ensure a fair and transparent assessment.

These factors include:

  • Fund Choices & Performance: Evaluating absolute and risk-adjusted performance over 1, 3, 5, and 10 years, alongside the diversity of fund options.
  • Fees & Charges: Reviewing management fees and overall expenses to ensure members receive fair value. Remember, we believe in ascending to the top, not racing to the bottom on fees alone.
  • Governance & Sustainability: Measuring alignment with sustainable investing principles and the good governance practices set out by the MPFA.
  • Service Quality: Assessing member and employer experiences, educational initiatives, and the scheme’s overall operational strength. Good performance at reasonable fees means little without high-quality service.

Earning a Gold rating for 10 consecutive years is a big deal, placing Sun Life in the highest echelon of MPF schemes. Only four MPF schemes have achieved this honour. Amongst the Gold rated schemes, Sun Life Rainbow shines brightly for its excellence across all evaluation criteria, including strong risk-adjusted investment performance and exceptional service levels. This is highlighted by its industry leadership in sustainable investing, while its diverse fund investment options and high-quality education for its members mean the scheme is appropriate for all MPF members, regardless of age and investment objectives.

For members and employers, a Gold rated scheme offers peace of mind. It ensures that contributions are being managed with care, transparency, and expertise, maximising retirement savings and offering a high-quality MPF experience.

Sun Life’s Rainbow MPF Scheme has exemplified these principles consistently for a decade, setting the benchmark for what an exceptional MPF scheme should be.

Sun Life’s 10-year Gold rating is more than an accolade—it’s a statement of trust, reliability, and long-term excellence. This remarkable achievement positions the Rainbow MPF Scheme as a shining example within the MPF landscape, a testament to its unwavering commitment to members’ financial wellbeing.

Speaking of long-term achievements, we have some breaking news…

To celebrate the MPF system’s 25th anniversary, we’ve created a new major award: the MPF Diamond Choice. This will be awarded to the scheme that has delivered the best value for money since the industry’s inception a quarter of a century ago.

Will Sun Life’s Rainbow MPF Scheme be the inaugural Diamond Choice? The winner will be revealed on Wednesday, the 4th of March.
