ACT ONE
Son walks into living room to chat. Father puts newspaper and glasses down, shuffles uncomfortably in his chair before looking at his son suspiciously.
SON
“Dad I can’t afford an apartment deposit, but I’ve an idea.”
FATHER
“What’s the idea?”
SON
“Well I also need a car, so I’m thinking I’ll buy the car first.”
FATHER
“But your apartment deposit won’t be enough to buy a car.”
SON
“Yeah, well I’ve thought about that; I’ll borrow the difference.”
FATHER
“So let me get this straight, you’re going to blow your deposit and borrow on high interest rates to buy an asset which becomes worthless over time. You not only blow your entire savings but have to save again for your apartment deposit. That’s quite possibly the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.”
SON
“Yeah, but I own a car.”
FATHER
“Like I said, quite possibly the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.”
Son walks out in a huff. Father once again shuffles uncomfortably in his chair, before putting his reading glasses on and begins reading a newspaper story on the benefits of Special Voluntary Contributions in the MPF system.
