Environmentally responsible MPF schemes recognized for the first time

Key points are as follows:

  • MPF Ratings’ annual MPF scheme ratings have now been published
  • Two MPF schemes achieve Gold rating for 10 consecutive years
  • An MPF Environmentally Responsible award is introduced for the first time reinforcing the MPF industry’s recent commitment to sustainable investing
  • The 2022 “MPF Scheme of the Year” will be announced on the 3rd of March at “The MPF Awards” where the “MPF People’s Choice Award” and the “MPF Employers’ Choice Award” will also be announced

MPF Ratings Ltd (MPFR), an independent MPF research specialist today announced its 10th annual MPF scheme ratings. The ratings are the MPF industry’s only publicly published assessment of every MPF schemes and considers multiple factors, not just performance and fees.  For 2022, a new factor, Environmental Responsibility (to support the MPFA’s recently announced “Principles for Adopting Sustainable Investing in the Investment and Risk Management Processes of MPF Funds”), was considered together with other sustainable factors; Governance and Social Responsibility.

According to MPF Ratings’ Chairman, Francis Chung (叢川普), the 2022 ratings were a major milestone and not just because environmental responsibility was considered for the first time, commenting, “2022 was the 10th year of rating MPF schemes, and in a decade of ratings only two MPF schemes have received a Gold rating, the highest rating possible, in each and every year.  Congratulations to Fidelity Retirement Master Trust and BOCI-Prudential’s My Choice MPF scheme for their consistent ability to deliver the highest value for money for their members.”

When asked how vital sustainable investing is to the future of the MPF landscape Mr Chung was forthright in his view, “Sustainability is not only vital for the future of Hong Kong’s MPF system but also for Hong Kong’ society, and the MPF system can play a vital role. By showing MPF’s 4.5m eligible Hong Kong workers that the MPF industry is seriously committed to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations, not only will better investment outcomes be achieved but also better societal outcomes. Sun Life and Principal’s respective support of diabetes and breast cancer awareness in our community, and HSBC’s sponsorship of the Hong Kong Clean Waterways Programme are positive and practical examples, beyond just investing, of ESG action in our community which should be applauded.”
